Course Description

This course provides healthcare and construction professionals with a practical framework for identifying and managing infection risks during construction, renovation, and maintenance activities. It focuses on the ICRA process, project classification, patient risk groups, precaution classes, and the implementation of control measures that protect patients, staff, and the care environment. The course is designed to help teams apply ICRA more consistently and confidently in real projects.

  • Intended audience: Engineering and facilities teams, infection prevention professionals, quality teams, nursing leaders, contractors, supervisors, and environmental services staff involved in healthcare construction and renovation work.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define key infection risks associated with construction, renovation, and maintenance activities in healthcare environments.
  • Classify construction activity types and patient risk groups using standard ICRA frameworks.
  • Determine and justify the appropriate class of precautions based on project scope and patient vulnerability.
  • Implement and evaluate infection prevention measures aligned with ICRA findings and control requirements.
  • Describe the components of a facility-specific ICRA program, including roles, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
