Course Description

This course establishes a standardized, evidence-based approach to dental instrument sterilization, ensuring safe and consistent reprocessing that prevents cross-contamination. It supports patient and staff safety while reinforcing standards compliance, documentation, monitoring, and manufacturer instructions for use. The course is designed to strengthen sterilization quality assurance and improve confidence in load release and recall decisions.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, sterilization or reprocessing staff, practice managers, and clinical leads responsible for instrument reprocessing or sterilization oversight.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with basic instrument reprocessing steps, sterilization equipment, and routine infection prevention practices in dental settings.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Recall and describe the complete sterilization workflow from instrument use to sterile storage in accordance with regulatory standards and manufacturer instructions for use.
  • Analyze mechanical, chemical, and biological monitoring data to determine sterilization effectiveness and identify process deviations or failures.
  • Investigate potential causes of sterilization failure, such as wet packs, operator error, or equipment malfunction.
  • Evaluate and document load release decisions and corrective actions based on established quality assurance and recall protocols.
  • Develop or revise sterilization process improvements or staff training plans based on audit findings, recall data, and performance trends.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
