Course Description

This course provides practical guidance on planning, implementing, and verifying dust control and containment measures during healthcare construction, renovation, and maintenance work. It focuses on preventing airborne contamination, protecting vulnerable patients, and strengthening interdisciplinary coordination throughout CRMD activities. The course emphasizes containment systems, ventilation, PPE, cleaning, breach response, and post-project review.

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Facilities professionals, healthcare engineering staff, environmental services teams, IPAC leads, contractors, project teams, supervisors, and administrative staff involved in CRMD projects.

    Recommended: Familiarity with healthcare construction workflows, containment concepts, or infection prevention responsibilities during facility projects.

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the infection control risks associated with construction, renovation, and maintenance activities in healthcare environments.
  • Apply the Infection Control Risk Assessment process to classify CRMD projects and determine appropriate dust control and containment measures.
  • Implement engineering and administrative controls, including barriers, ventilation management, PPE, and cleaning protocols, to maintain effective dust containment during CRMD activities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of containment, cleaning, and verification activities using documentation, inspection, and air quality data aligned with relevant standards.
  • Develop and document a breach response and post-project review plan that supports continuous improvement in CRMD dust control practices.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
