Course Description

This course equips the long-term care IPAC Lead — with no prior construction or engineering background — to protect residents from the infection risks created by construction, renovation, maintenance, and design (CRMD) activities. It builds the judgment to conduct an Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) before work begins, match preventive measures to the level of risk, keep a project honest while it runs, and verify that a space is genuinely safe before residents return. Grounded in CSA Z317.13 and the Public Health Ontario CRMD toolkit, the course covers dust containment and hoarding, ventilation and negative pressure, water and Legionella controls, traffic flow, environmental cleaning, breach and stop-work response, commissioning, and IPAC's role in facility design

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended Audience: IPAC Leads (new or experienced) in long-term care and continuing-care homes; also valuable for infection prevention committee members, Directors of Care/administrators, and facilities/maintenance staff involved in CRMD projects
  • Recommended: This course assumes no prior construction or engineering knowledge. A working familiarity with the IPAC Lead role in long-term care is helpful but not required.

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain why construction, renovation, maintenance, and design (CRMD) activities create infection risk, and why long-term care residents are especially vulnerable.
  • Identify the standards and the multidisciplinary team that govern CRMD work, and describe the IPAC Lead's responsibilities across the planning, work, and commissioning phases.
  • Conduct an Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) step by step — classifying construction activity type and resident risk group (including adjacencies) and using the risk matrix to determine the required preventive-measures level.
  • Select, verify, and monitor the preventive measures at each level, including hoarding, anterooms, ventilation and negative pressure, water and Legionella controls, traffic flow, and environmental cleaning
  • Distinguish minor from major breaches, run a stop-work order, complete post-construction commissioning before re-occupancy, and provide IPAC input into long-term care design and planning.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
