Course Description

This course provides a focused overview of infection prevention and control principles tailored to correctional facilities, where environmental, structural, and population-specific factors increase communicable disease risk. It equips healthcare and correctional professionals with practical strategies for screening, surveillance, routine precautions, additional precautions, outbreak readiness, and continuity of care. The course is designed to support safer care delivery and stronger infection prevention systems in custody settings.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Correctional healthcare staff, nurses, infection prevention professionals, quality teams, supervisors, administrators, and others involved in communicable disease prevention, screening, surveillance, or outbreak response in correctional settings.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with correctional health operations, communicable disease risks, and routine infection prevention practices in congregate or secure environments.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the unique environmental and structural factors that increase infectious disease risk in correctional facilities.
  • Identify priority communicable diseases of concern in custody settings, including bloodborne infections, tuberculosis, and outbreak-prone respiratory illnesses.
  • Apply core infection prevention and control practices, including intake screening, surveillance, and standard precautions, within a correctional environment.
  • Differentiate between routine practices and additional precautions required for bloodborne pathogen exposures and airborne disease risks such as tuberculosis.
  • Evaluate prevention and harm reduction strategies to support safe care delivery and continuity of care for incarcerated populations.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
