Course Description

This course provides foundational, practical infection prevention and control knowledge for staff across long-term care. Learners are introduced to core principles such as the chain of transmission, Standard and Transmission-Based Precautions, hand hygiene, PPE, environmental cleaning, outbreak response, and the everyday decisions that reduce infection risk. The course is designed to build a shared IPAC baseline across departments so teams can work more consistently and safely

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended Audience: Staff across all long-term care departments, including nursing, PSWs/HCAs, environmental services, dietary, laundry, maintenance/facilities, rehabilitation, educators, supervisors/managers, IPAC professionals, and other team members who support safe resident care
  • Recommended: Familiarity with day-to-day long-term care workflows and the resident care environment

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the chain of transmission and the components of Standard and Transmission-Based Precautions in long-term care settings
  • Demonstrate proper hand hygiene technique, including the 4 Moments for Hand Hygiene, and apply Point-of-Care Risk Assessment to routine care tasks
  • Differentiate cleaning from disinfection and identify high-touch surfaces and shared equipment requiring routine or enhanced cleaning
  • Explain the additional infection prevention and control measures required during an outbreak, including cohorting, enhanced cleaning, PPE adjustments, and exposure reporting procedures
  • Recognize factors such as staffing, antimicrobial use, employee illness, visitors, and pets that influence infection risk, and describe each person’s role in supporting safe IPAC practice

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
