Course Description

This course provides perioperative teams with practical, evidence-based infection prevention and control principles specific to the operating room environment. It focuses on transmission risks, aseptic practice, sterile supply handling, environmental containment, and occupational safety measures that support safer surgical care. The course is designed to strengthen day-to-day OR practice and reduce contamination and infection risks during perioperative workflows.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Clinical staff, surgical team members, perioperative leaders, educators, supervisors, and infection prevention professionals working in operating room environments.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with basic perioperative workflow, sterile field concepts, and routine infection prevention practices in surgical settings.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the core principles of infection prevention and control in the operating room, including transmission pathways, the chain of infection, and environmental containment measures.
  • Apply aseptic technique and sterile supply handling principles to maintain procedural integrity and prevent contamination during surgical interventions.
  • Analyze environmental and procedural factors that influence infection risk during perioperative care and implement strategies to mitigate them.
  • Implement occupational health and safety practices that protect all individuals in the surgical environment, including patients and healthcare personnel.
  • Verify environmental control measures and adherence to aseptic standards to maintain a safe surgical environment.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
