Course Description

This advanced course expands perioperative IPAC practice by integrating surveillance, human factors, root cause analysis, governance, and continuous quality improvement into the surgical environment. It is designed for teams who want to move beyond foundational practice and strengthen system-level infection prevention in the OR. The course helps learners connect day-to-day perioperative actions with broader surgical site infection prevention strategies and safety culture.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Perioperative clinical staff, OR leaders, supervisors, educators, infection prevention professionals, quality teams, and others involved in operating room safety and infection prevention oversight.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with OR workflow, basic infection prevention principles, and surgical site infection prevention concepts.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain how infection prevention and control principles integrate into perioperative systems to reduce surgical site infections and related risks across healthcare settings.
  • Differentiate between contamination pathways, surgical site infection classifications, and surveillance definitions to apply consistent infection monitoring across OR environments.
  • Analyze clinical, environmental, and human factors that contribute to infection transmission and prevention within perioperative workflows, including the anesthesia work area.
  • Evaluate surveillance data and root cause analysis findings to identify performance gaps and guide continuous quality improvement in OR infection prevention.
  • Design governance and leadership strategies that sustain safety culture, accountability, and interdisciplinary collaboration in perioperative infection control programs.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
