Course Description

This course provides long-term care teams with a practical, repeatable framework for recognizing, investigating, controlling, and closing infectious disease outbreaks. Learners will review outbreak definitions, case-definition building, time-place-person analysis, line listing, attack rates, immediate response measures, containment strategies, communication tools, and post-outbreak review practices. The course is designed to strengthen outbreak readiness and help teams respond in a more organized, timely, and effective way.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended Audience: IPAC leads, nursing and clinical leadership, long-term care administrators, outbreak management team members, physicians/NPs, pharmacists, environmental services leaders, educators, and other personnel who support outbreak readiness and response
  • Recommended: Familiarity with basic IPAC principles, surveillance processes, isolation practices, and outbreak communication in LTC

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define what constitutes an outbreak in long-term care, including case definitions, epidemiologic links, and recognition of cases above baseline
  • Explain reporting responsibilities and regulatory considerations for outbreaks within the local jurisdiction and organizational framework
  • Implement immediate outbreak response measures, including activation of the outbreak management team, initiation of isolation precautions, and early control strategies
  • Apply appropriate outbreak control measures such as cohorting, staff management, visitor guidance, antiviral use, and environmental controls based on the situation
  • Strengthen facility outbreak preparedness by identifying practical improvements to response processes and post-outbreak review practices

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
