Course Description

This course equips veterinary teams with a practical, systems-based approach to implementing and sustaining antimicrobial stewardship in everyday practice. It focuses on preventing avoidable antimicrobial use through strong infection prevention, diagnostic thinking, prescribing processes, documentation, and team communication. The course is designed to help veterinary practices strengthen stewardship culture while protecting animal health, public health, and long-term antimicrobial effectiveness.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, practice managers, veterinary nurses or technicians, and support staff involved in prescribing, treatment planning, documentation, or practice improvement.

  • Recommended: Familiarity with routine veterinary clinical workflow, common prescribing decisions, and basic infection prevention practices in veterinary settings.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of antimicrobial stewardship and the shared roles of veterinary team members in implementing a practice-level antimicrobial stewardship program.
  • Identify system-level opportunities within veterinary practice workflows to prevent avoidable antimicrobial use through infection prevention and control.
  • Apply structured diagnostic and prescribing processes to support judicious antimicrobial selection, dosing, and duration.
  • Demonstrate effective team-based communication strategies that support stewardship-aligned antimicrobial decisions with clients.
  • Evaluate antimicrobial use within a veterinary practice using documentation, audit, and feedback to support continuous improvement of an antimicrobial stewardship program.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
