Course Description

This course provides dialysis teams with practical, evidence-based guidance to identify, prevent, and respond to bloodborne pathogen risks in daily practice. It focuses on exposure pathways, dialysis workflow risks, PPE, aseptic technique, environmental controls, equipment disinfection, and occupational health measures. The course is designed to support safer dialysis care and strengthen a culture of zero harm in dialysis environments.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended audience: Hemodialysis nurses, dialysis technicians, environmental services staff, supervisors, educators, infection prevention professionals, quality teams, and occupational health staff involved in dialysis infection prevention.

    Recommended: Familiarity with dialysis workflow, blood and body fluid exposure risks, and routine infection prevention practices in hemodialysis settings.

Kamyab Ghatan

Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the epidemiology, modes of transmission, and key risk factors for bloodborne pathogens within dialysis environments.
  • Differentiate infection risks across the dialysis workflow and analyze how environmental, equipment, and human factors contribute to transmission.

  • Apply evidence-based infection prevention and control practices, including aseptic technique, PPE use, and equipment disinfection, to reduce exposure to blood and body fluids during dialysis care.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of environmental, engineering, and occupational health measures in minimizing bloodborne pathogen transmission in diverse dialysis settings.
  • Formulate evidence-based interventions to strengthen occupational health programs, including staff immunization and exposure response systems.

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post‑test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (up to three attempts), and submitting the course evaluation. If a learner does not achieve 80% within three attempts, they must re-do the course (re-complete required content) within their access period before attempting the assessment again. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion.
