Course Description

This program is designed to prepare IPAC Champions in long-term care to support safer daily practice, strengthen infection prevention awareness across departments, and contribute to surveillance, outbreak response, environmental safety, and quality improvement. Through six self-paced courses, learners build practical skills in Standard Precautions and occupational health, infection recognition and diagnostic basics, surveillance and outbreak investigation, environmental hygiene and reprocessing, leadership and quality improvement, and Ontario long-term care IPAC requirements. The program is intended to help IPAC Champions move beyond awareness alone and become confident practice supporters, risk spotters, and escalation partners within their homes.

Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended Audience: This program is designed for IPAC Champions and other long-term care team members across departments, including nursing, PSWs/HCAs, clinical leaders, educators, environmental services, dietary, rehabilitation, occupational health and safety personnel, managers, quality and risk teams, and other staff who support infection prevention, outbreak readiness, compliance, staff safety, and quality improvement in long-term care.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with day-to-day long-term care operations, routine resident care workflows, and a role that includes observing practice, reinforcing safe habits, or supporting team-based quality and safety improvement.

Meet the instructor

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply Standard Precautions, point-of-care risk assessment, and occupational health principles to reduce exposure risk and support safer day-to-day practice in long-term care
  • Recognize common infectious syndromes, atypical presentations in older adults, and specimen-collection and diagnostic principles that support timely, accurate infection identification and antimicrobial stewardship
  • Use organizational risk assessment, surveillance planning, data review, and core outbreak management principles to identify trends and support early response to infection risks in LTC
  • Identify environmental hygiene, reprocessing, water, dust, shared-equipment, and workflow risks within the care environment and escalate concerns appropriately as an IPAC Champion
  • Support practice improvement by integrating leadership, staff education, quality improvement, evidence-informed decision-making, and Ontario-specific LTC IPAC requirements into everyday infection prevention efforts

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post-test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80%, and submitting the course evaluation. Upon successful completion, learners may download a certificate of completion. Learners must complete all 6 included courses to be considered program-complete
