IPAC Lead / Back-Up Orientation Program for Long-Term Care

Course Description

This program is designed to prepare new, emerging, and back-up IPAC Leads in long-term care to support safe daily practice, strengthen infection prevention oversight, and contribute to surveillance, outbreak recognition, auditing, education, quality improvement, staff safety, and system-level IPAC risk management.

Through five IPAC Lead Orientation courses plus an Outbreak Investigation Bootcamp, learners build practical skills in IPAC program coordination, surveillance and data-driven decision-making, organism-specific outbreak response, audit follow-up, targeted education, quality improvement, occupational health coordination, environmental controls, and advanced IPAC oversight.

The program is intended to help IPAC Leads and back-up IPAC Leads move beyond basic awareness and become confident program coordinators, risk identifiers, outbreak responders, audit interpreters, and escalation partners within their homes.


Prerequisites / required prior knowledge

  • None required
  • Intended Audience: This program is designed for new IPAC Leads, back-up IPAC Leads, designate IPAC Leads, DOCs/ADOCs supporting IPAC oversight, clinical managers, nursing leaders, and long-term care team members preparing to take on IPAC leadership or support responsibilities.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with day-to-day long-term care operations, resident care workflows, Routine Practices, Additional Precautions, outbreak response processes, documentation expectations, and the role of interdisciplinary teams in supporting infection prevention and control.

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the role, responsibilities, accountability, and boundaries of the IPAC Lead and back-up IPAC Lead within a long-term care setting. 
  • Assess the current state of an IPAC program using structured review of policies, surveillance, audits, education, documentation, governance, and risk indicators. 
  • Apply surveillance principles, case definitions, infection trend review, line listing, infection rates, attack rates, and data interpretation to support early detection and decision-making. 
  • Implement practical outbreak response actions, including early recognition, immediate precautions, cohorting, specimen collection, staff movement control, enhanced cleaning, communication, and public health notification. 
  • Differentiate common long-term care outbreak types, including gastrointestinal illness, influenza, COVID-19, RSV and other respiratory viruses, scabies, iGAS, MDROs, skin and soft tissue infection clusters, and other emerging events. 
  • Use audit findings, staff interviews, documentation review, surveillance trends, and environmental observations to identify IPAC gaps and prioritize corrective actions.
  • Develop targeted education, monitoring, escalation, and quality improvement strategies to support sustained practice change.
  • Apply advanced IPAC oversight principles to staff safety, occupational health, respiratory protection, PPE stewardship, environmental controls, device-related risks, antimicrobial stewardship, and emergency readiness. 

Completion requirements:

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing each post-test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80%, and submitting the course/program evaluation

Upon successful completion of all 6 courses, learners may download a certificate of completion. For the full IPAC Lead / Back-Up Orientation Program, learners must complete all included courses to be considered program-complete.
