Program Description

This collection is designed to build practical, clinical infection prevention skills for nurses working in long-term care. Across six self-paced courses, learners develop the knowledge and confidence to prevent, recognize, and respond to the most significant clinical infection risks facing LTC residents—including urinary catheter-associated infections, pneumonia and aspiration, wound-related infections, multidrug-resistant organisms, fungal infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and sepsis.


Each course is independent and includes its own learning activities, assessment, and certificate of completion. Learners may complete courses in any order, though a recommended sequence is provided.

  • Intended Audience: This collection is designed for registered nurses (RNs), registered practical nurses (RPNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and other clinical staff working in long-term care settings, including IPAC Leads and backups, Directors of Care, wound care nurses, nurse educators, and quality improvement leads.
  • Recommended: Familiarity with day-to-day long-term care clinical operations, basic infection prevention principles, and routine resident care workflows.

Kamyab Ghatan

MD, AL-CIP™, CIC®, LTC-CIP®, DISIPC, CDIPC
Dr. Kamyab Ghatan is a medical doctor and infection prevention leader who develops practical, standards-based training for diverse environments, including acute and long-term care, ambulatory and dental clinics, veterinary practices, and construction/renovation settings. His work spans infection prevention, surveillance, water management, sterile processing, and implementation science, with a focus on translating standards into workflows teams can actually use. Dr. Ghatan is the founder of the International College of Infection Control Professionals (ICICP).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this collection, learners will be able to:

  • Apply infection prevention principles to the clinical care of residents with urinary catheters, wounds, respiratory compromise, and invasive devices in long-term care settings.
  • Recognize the signs and risk factors for urinary tract infections, pneumonia, wound infections, MDRO colonization, fungal infections, and sepsis in older adults, including atypical presentations.
  • Apply antimicrobial stewardship principles to support appropriate antibiotic use, reduce unnecessary prescribing, and prevent resistance in LTC residents.
  • Use specimen collection and diagnostic principles to support timely and accurate infection identification across clinical scenarios.
  • Identify environmental, device-related, and care-practice risk factors for infection and apply targeted preventive measures within scope of nursing practice.
  • Support practice improvement and escalation by integrating clinical IPAC knowledge into daily care decisions, resident monitoring, and team communication.

Learners receive credit after viewing all required content, passing the post-test/final assessment with a minimum score of 80%, and submitting the course evaluation.
